Ian Dowling joined Shannon in 2003 as a 20 year old from Kilkenny RFC where his talents were recognised by Mick Galwey and his path to an international cap was preceded with exceptional dedication. As a Shannon player he initially played seconds rugby, before becoming a regular on the senior side. Munster came beckoning and again hard work saw him stake an almost permanent place in the side. International recognition came just before his Munster career blossomed in the guise of the Rugby league code, but once he established himself with Munster, Rugby union was always his choice. Ireland A caps came in the Churchill cup and in 2008 was an uncapped tourist to New Zealand and Australia. His two international caps came the following year when Ireland Toured USA and Canada where be started both games on the wing. His career was prematurely ended when a hip injury forced his hand in 2011.
