Munster U13 lge section B
Shannon
17 - Garryowen 7
The
pace setters in section B of the north Munster U13 league met in
Coonagh on Sunday morning. Both Shannon and Garryowen were aiming to
protect 100% records. It was the boys in Black and Blue who were to
prevail.
Both sides have been registering
big scores against all
comers but Sundays game was a typical Shannon - Garryowen derby with no
quarter being asked or given.
Despite conceding height and
weight
in the pack Shannon refused to take a backward step and great credit
must be given to the the front row of Ty Chan, Adam Moloney and Luke
Moylan who refused to give way to their larger opponents at the set
piece.
Shannons tactic of keeping
Garryowen pinned back into their
half through the boot paid dividends when they took the lead through
Darren Gavin who collected a kick outside the Garryowen 22 and danced
his way through 3 defenders to touch down to the right of the posts
after 10 minutes, the conversion was missed. Shannon pressed for
another score for the remainder of the half but resolute Garryowen
defence kept them at bay.
The second half started much the
same as
the first with Shannon dominating territory and possession. Big Jerry
McCabe dominated for Shannon out of touch and the back row of Niall
Mulcahy, Oisin Bernard and Jack O Donnell tackled and carried with real
menace. It was Garryowen however who took the lead 5 minutes into the
second half when Shannon fumbled in midfield a footrace resulted in
Garryowen touching down under the post, the conversion was a formality
and the light blues led 7- 5. The try seemed to stun Shannon and
Garryowen enjoyed their best period for the next ten minutes.
Shannon
regrouped and recycled the ball through numerous phases with backs and
forwards involved then following some crisp passing Jack O Donnel
barged his way over, the conversion was expertly struck by Cian
Clifford from wide out on the right to give Shannon a 5 point cushion.
It was Clifford who capped a man of the match display by sealing the
game with a magnificent try with the last play of the game he missed
the conversion from out wide. This was Shannons most complete
performance of the season to date and each member of the squad
contributed handsomely showing huge amounts of passion and skill in
securing the points against a very good Garryowen side. I have no doubt
these sides will meet again in the business end f the season

Oct26th 2010: James Keating Tournament winners !
Continuing their impressive start to the season the Shannon u13's
annexed the James Keating memorial tournament in Bruff on The bank
holiday Monday last.
Competing with 19 other teams from around Munster the Shannon boys
showed all the traits that are required by successful Shannon teams,
tenacious tackling, aggressive forward play and slick handling from the
backs.

In the group stages Shannon accounted for Kilfeacle 7-0 and Corca
dhuibhne 8-0 and as a result of there massive try haul were given a bye
into the semi finals.
In the semi finals it was traditional foes Young Munster who provided
the opposition. From the outset the Shannon lads tore into the
opposition and did not allow them any time on the ball. When in
possession Shannon moved it quickly to the wings and ran out winners by
six tries to one.
On to the final where a very large and skillful Newcastlewest team were
the opposition, it was a titanic struggle with both sides producing
massive hits and some exciting rugby but on the stroke of full time it
was Shannon who dug deepest to produce the killer blow when from a scrum
on the left the backs moved it wide for Cian Clifford to pounce for the
winner.
For the record in the four games Shannon scored 21 tries and conceded
one. It truly was a squad effort with each of the boys contributing
fully.
Captain Ty Chan proudly collected the trophy on behalf of his delighted
team mates.

In glorious sunshine more reminiscent of where our visitors hail from, a
combined Shannon Under 13/14 team took on Toulouse Montaudran at LIT on
Wednesday, April 8th. Due to differences in Irish and French playing laws
we had to agree modified rules, but both teams put on a display of open
running rugby which was a joy to watch.
In the first of the three matches, our visitors ran out 17-0 winners.
Two lightening quick tries were scored while we were only settling in to
the game. Our combination team improved in the second match but were
beaten 20-12, Shannon tries coming from James Clancy and Eoghan Kelly.
We did win the third game 19-5 following tries from Patrick Murphy,
Ronan McKenna and Cormac O'Donnell, one of which was converted by Ronan
Hunt, the other by Ronan McKenna.
Afterwards in a reception in the Shannon Clubhouse, our President Liam
Costello and Underage Chairman Michael Ryan were on hand to make and
receive presentations from their opposite numbers in Toulouse
Montaudran. We treated our guests to a rousing rendition of "The Isle"
led by Coach Martin Power. The French team had an anthem of their own
which they sang out with gusto by way of response.

North Munster U14 League Semi-Final - Shannon 17 Young Munster 0
Another excellent performance from our forwards laid the foundations for
a 17-0 victory over Young Munster in the North Munster Under 14 League
semi-final. All our points were scored in the first half - first centre
Cormac O'Donnell crashed over from close range after 11 minutes after
some great approach work by Jack Dineen to be followed shortly after by
a trademark Conor Glynn try after his barnstorming run from the ten
metre line. Just before half time Cormac O'Donnell treated the Shannon
faithful to a wonderful try after being put through on the half way line
by Michael Foley. Ronan McKenna added the conversion to leave the score
at 17-0 at half time.
We had to withstand a huge Young Munsters fightback in the second half,
but our defence was superb and held out to see us in to the final where
we will meet either Thomond or Old Crescent.
Man of the Match was loosehead prop Tony Cusack who gave no quarter to
his opposite number and caused the Young Munster scrum to go backwards
on a number of occasions.

North Munster Under 14 League - Garryowen 0 Shannon 5 (Sunday March 8th)
We've made it five out of five now and sit on top of our section of the
North Munster Under 14 League with only one more match to play. A
cracking game of rugby played in very difficult conditions in Dooradoyle
finished up 5-0 to us. The key to unlocking the Garryowen defence came
early in the second half when a cross-field kick from Ronan McKenna was
gathered by Robert Whyte who made no mistake in the corner. The try was
almost a carbon copy of the famous one scored by Shane Horgan for
Ireland against England in Croke Park in 2007. Unfortunately the strong
wind prevented the try being converted so it was a very tense 30 minutes
for the large Shannon faithful to endure until the referee blew the
final whistle.
Earlier in the first half, Robert Whyte went over in the corner for what
looked like a legitimate try - however the referee deemed one of the
passes leading up to the touchdown was forward and we were denied the
score.
With two minutes left to go in the second half wing forward Michael
Foley intercepted a clever Garryowen backs move inside our own 22 and
sprinted clear into Garryowen territory. However he was hauled down by
the chasing Garryowen cover just 5 metres from the try line and being
isolated and without support from his team mates was forced to release
the ball to a relieved Garryowen player who cleared to the safety of
touch.
There were so many contenders for Man of the Match it was hard to pick
just one player, but for the four Garryowen scrums we turned over and
for his immense work rate around the field our loose head prop Tony
Cusack was a worthy winner.
