Shannon v Clonmel
Our Ladies took to the pitch this weekend to welcome Clonmel to Coonagh in the third round of their league.
Conditions were prefect for a match with a dry day and little wind. Shannon were looking srtong with a solid starting team and pleanty of cover from the bench.
Clonmel were fist to put points on the board, scoring in the first ten minutes of the game from a well worked set piece from a maul. Shannon settled into the game after this and it wasn't long before newcomer Leslie Cosgrave spotted a gap and exploited it, running in a great individual try!
Play continues with Shannon playing our own game, not getting sucked into a forward battle and spreading the ball wide as much as possible. Saoirse Kennedy and Rebecca Casey in particular were confident in attack making the hard yards when necessary. Nicolett Finn was a danger with ball in hand and she broke the first up tackle to offload the ball to Lea O'Dwyer who, not to be outdone by her center partner finished off a fantastic play by running on the games second try after 27 minutes.
Ten minutes later saw another great break up the middle of the pitch with Lea O'Dwyer again in support again, Lea was held up just short of the line and Shannon were awarded a penalty for Clonmel coming off their feet in the ruck. Quick thinking on Rebecca O'Shea's part saw her take a quick tip and go and go in for Shannon's third try unnoticed!
Clonmel kicked into overdrive here and used the cover of the forwards to protect the ball. They worked the ball down the pitch and were camped on the Shannon line when their efforts paid off and they went over for a try at 42 minutes leaing the half time score 15-10.
the second half kicked off and Shannon went out with gusto. Play remained in the middle ofd the pitch with neither team budging. First up hits were perfect and both teams were utalising possession well. Shannon found themselves in possession and good link up play between the forwards and the backs saw Siobhan McCarthy power over the line for the fourth try securing the bonus point for Shannon.
Shannon didn't take the foot off the pedal and it wasn't long before we were back in the Clonmel half attacking from their five meter line. Leslie Cosgrave backed herself again and took the chance to cut back inside, getting through the gap and scoring under the posts. Valerie Power converted this to bring the score to 25-10 Again this was followed by a Lea O'Dwyer try five minutes later!
As the match wound down and slowly drew to a close, Lizzy O'Dwyer sniped around the corner of a ruck and got in for Shannons final try of the match. To credit Clonmel they didn't relent and their hard work paid off when they again scored in thelast minute of the match to leave the scoreline 39-17.
