With the Munster v Maori All Blacks match taking place in Thomond Park last Friday, we changed up from the usual Friday night lights local derby we are used to meeting Bohs in, and took to the 4g pitch in the UL. A gloomy day greeted us with a moderate breeze to our backs and the constant threat of rain in the sky.
We kicked off and recovered bringing our attack up the middle of the pitch. We gave away a penalty for not rolling away which Bohs kicked to their 10, gaining possession in the games first lineout. Bohs mauled from this but we held them and when they didn’t use the ball we were awarded a scrum. Bohs were awarded a penalty from the scrum from which they opted to tip and go, kicking the ball to our 22. We were in possession in the line out and chose to maul it, we made great ground before the ball was passed out to Conor Fitzgerald who kicked us ahead. Bohs knocked on the ball here and we scrummed down getting clean ball out to the backs. Greg O’Shea ran onto the ball at pace and put up a Garryowen, recovered by Bohs who launched an attack but were penalised when they failed to release the ball. We were awarded a penalty on their ten and Conor Fitzgerald was very unlucky to just skim the posts leaving the score 0-0 at 6 minutes.
Bohs kicked off but knocked on the ball in the process, leaving us with a scrum on their 22. We got the ball out to Luke O’Dea who saw a chance and chipped through, unfortunately this went dead. Bohs dropped out and we returned the kick to their 5 gaining a lineout. We mauled off this and were making solid ground towards the line, breaking at the back only to be held up going over. We took the 5-meter scrum here, and after it was reset twice; opted to kick to touch for a penalty. We mauled from the lineout and were awarded another penalty for Bohs hitting early, again we kicked for touch. The ball was dropped in the next lineout; we managed to recover but gave away a penalty for holding the ball in, Bohs kicked to just inside their 10. Bohs got the ball to their out half who kicked them onto our 22 and we returned, resulting in a lineout on half way. The match was stopped here for a few minutes as Niall Mulcahy picked up a blood injury.
Play resumed as we quickly gained a penalty, kicking to Bohs 22. We got clean ball from the lineout and attacked across the pitch utilising all space. Bohs out half was then sin binned for an offence meaning they were down to 14 men allowing us to kick the penalty to their 5. We mauled from the lineout and Lee Nicholas was strong in attack, peeling off the back of the maul and attacking their line. The ball came back in the ruck and Keith Kavanagh wasted no time in shipping it to the corner where Riley Winter was waiting to barrel over the line for a fantastic try that came from a great forwards maul. We missed the conversion but lead 5-0 as we came out of the first quarter.
John Foley recovered from the kick off and took the ball up, finding Conor Fitzgerald in support who kicked us to our 10. Bohs mauled from the line out but didn’t gain much ground before their 8 broke off, we sealed in and turned the ball over. The ball was spread out to the backs and Shane Mullally kicked us on, Bohs recovered and launched a counter attack back at the Shannon line. Bohs got a penalty here and kicked to out 5 meter. They mauled from the lineout and were edging closer to our line. As the 8 picked and went, the forwards formed in pods and kept up their relentless attack. Each Shannon player put in the hits as needed and made it as difficult as possible. The ball was held up as Bohs went over our line. We stopped for another injury and Bohs took a lineout on our 5, again they mauled and peeled off the back. We kept up our solid defence despite the pressure. Again, we stopped for an injury with on our 5 under the posts with Bohs still in possession and a scrum coming to them. After two rests the ref blew up for a penalty try to Bohs who converted, going ahead 7-5 at 32 minutes.
We kicked off and Bohs recovered attacking from their 22. They kicked to half way but missed touch, we recovered and attacked with James Vaughan bringing the ball up. We went back for a penalty which saw Bohs offside, Conor Fitz kicked us to their 22. We mauled from this lineout and drove hard, working our way down the pitch. Bohs came through and stole the ball and while they were in the motion of passing the ball out wide, the ref deemed Greg O’Shea’s challenge to be illegal and gave Greg a yellow card. Bohs kicked to their own 22 and took a lineout and after a dummy maul, got the ball out to their backs. They kicked and we returned, Bohs recovered and brought up the ball only for Shannon to be quick off the mark and turnover, attacking back through our forwards. John Foley and James Vaughan were very strong in attack and made great carries. We got as far as the Bohs 22, when we were awarded a penalty here for Bohs not rolling away from contact and Conor Fitzgerald put it over the posts leaving the score 8-5 at half time.
Bohs kicked off the second half and gained a scrum on our ten form a knock on. They kicked from the back of the scrum and gained a lineout in which we stole and kicked to our 22. Bohs overthrew the lineout to the waiting arms of Ty Chan and we set off on attack again. After a few phases Bohs turned the ball over and ran hard at our line Richard Mullane did well to tackle them into touch as our defence covered across the pitch well. Minutes later and we were in possession of a scrum on our 22, this collapsed and was reset and Shannon were awarded a penalty. We tipped and went with Conor Fitzgerald kicking us ahead, Bohs recovered and attacked back down the pitch edging into our 22. We got stuck in the contact zone so the ref awarded Bohs a scrum on our 22 in front of the posts, we turned the ball over and found Luke O’Dea who kicked to half way.
Bohs recovered and brought the ball back up and we were unfortunate to give away a penalty for not supporting our own weight in the ruck. Bohs kicked to our 22 and Riley was on the ball to steal the lineout and we got the ball to Conor Fitzgerald who kicked us deep into the Bohs half, they recovered but Shannon were very quick to chase. They kicked back and we again returned bringing us all the way to the Bohs 22, again we chased and applied good pressure forcing Bohs to kick the ball out on their 10meter. We knocked on the ball in the lineout and Bohs were awarded the scrum. After two collapses and no prior-warning, the ref bizarrely sin-binned Tony Cusack. Bohs tipped and went inside our 22 and spread the ball out wide, going in over the line for a converted try leaving the score 14-8 at 56 minutes.
We kicked off sending the ball deep into the Bohs 22 and they brought the ball back up at pace, Shane Mullally put in a great tackle bringing his player into touch just outside their 22. Unfortunately, at this point a bad injury forced the end of Richie Mullanes match. As play resumed and we gained a penalty for Bohs offside, we went for the posts and were unfortunate to miss. Bohs kicked short from this and recovered the ball only to knock on and gift us a scrum just inside our ten. We got the ball out to the bakcs and Shane Mully put a lovely chip through, Bohs spilled the ball and we gained a scrum just inside their 22. John Foley picked and went off the back of this we began to attack hard. Bohs got over an unprotected player and turned this over kicking to touch just inside their half for a linout that they took well and spread the ball wide allowing a kick to our 22. They held possession in the lineout but knocked on in the next phase allowing us to scrum down. John Foley again picked and went and the Bohs 7 saw a yellow card for a dangerous tip tackle at 65 minutes.
We kicked to our 22 and got good ball from the lineout, out backs took the ball on with the forwards supporting in pods. We dropped the ball forward and Bohs recovered utilizing their advantage. Once over the gain line and a few phases on, Bohs knocked the ball forward and Riley Winter intercepted but was unfortunate to knock the ball on in the process. We went back for the original knock on just outside our 22, right of the posts. We kicked off the back of the scum and sent the ball down the pitch where Bohs recovered attacking back up the pitch. They knocked on and we took the scrum on their ten gaining a penalty here also. We kicked to the corner and took the lineout, getting secure ball off the top which was enough to see Shane Mullally go over in the corner for a try that we were unlucky to not convert leaving the score 14-13 at 74 minutes.
Play went on in a similar fashion, and after a penalty in the scrum Bohs kicked to our 10 and put the ball off the pitch to end the match. While it is heart-breaking to lose a match like this by a solitary point it shows that there isn’t much separating us and the higher teams in this division! It was a really promising display from the lads and it shows that we definitely have the talent and ability to compete at the top. It’s a week off this week and onto Old Wesley
