Shannon Notes Weekending January 16th 2010

With the nationwide cancellation of games these will probably be the shortest notes of the season. Although on field activity has been restricted, our difficulties off field continue and it seems that lately it never rains but pours. Along with thousands of other homes and business throughout the country, we were victim to a burst mains pipe in the Clubhouse which caused extensive and expensive damage which adds considerably to our problems and it will take a huge effort to ensure that we are ready for the coming weeks.

Without delving too in depth into our issues with the IRFU, the club have availed of our right to appeal and we can't really expand too much, as the process is ongoing and we can't betray the confidentiality of the proceedings, although it would seem that such notions don't bother others.

Hopefully we can return to happier matters this Saturday when we are scheduled to return to AIB league action with Dolphin due in Limerick.

Thomond Park had initially been made available for this game, but that permission was understandably rescinded with the pitch condition and its preservation for Munster's big game next week taking precedence. Coonagh however was benefiting from the thaw and as long as the temperatures remain within reason we are confident that the game can take place there if necessary, but as with all weather related matters we can take nothing for granted. Kickoff is scheduled for 2.30. Also returning to action are the U/21's who host Waterpark in also in Coonagh at 2.30 on Saturday.

The family and friends of our friend Pat O'Connor have asked to convey their most sincere appreciation to everyone who has sympathised with them over the last week or so. It is a most difficult time his family and friends and they have been greatly comforted by the outpouring of genuine goodwill they have received. Pat was given a fantastic send off and the sad occasion of his funeral was lightened by some wonderful memories and anecdotes from his son Noel and his great friend Thady Coughlan. These happy memories are how we will remember Pat. The Gardai in Mayorstone are also to be commended and thanked for their assistance in the funeral arrangements.

Finally with the six nations only a matter of weeks away ,we remind our members that applications for tickets for the home matches are still be taken by Tadhg Crowe. Once again it would appear that the uptake on our allocation will be low and the financial consequences will be disastrous for the club. We again ask our members and friends to assist us in reducing our potential loss by contacting friends, family or colleagues that may want tickets for these games.
