Shannon Notes Weekending May1st 2010

It’s a sure sign that the season is coming to a close when the annual Alan Oakley underage day takes place. Last Sunday, once gain the underage players and coaches wrapt up their season with the festival of rugby and again it was a great success thanks to the efforts of all our underage coaches. Results elsewhere however didn’t really go in our favour with all of our sides in cup competitions knocked out and all by a slender margin. Old Crescent gained revenge on our U/14’s for the league final defeat when they won by 15-14, again in a thrilling game while the U 13’s suffered a last minute try to consign their season to the past.

At U/15 level Bruff claimed the right to progress with a 17-12 win.

Our adult sides didn’t fare much better with the U/21’s and thirds suffering defeats in the respective cup competitions. On Friday night Garryowen got the better of the U/21’s in the North Munster cup, and without taking from the light blues victory, our lads had a look of a tired side after the season. The lack lustre performance yielded what it deserved the game certainly had an end of season feel about it. Despite the loss in these competitions the U/21’s can consider their season a reasonable success. With a young panel of players they reached the semi final of the All Ireland which is a considerable achievement and the effort invested in this squad by the coaches and the club was certainly productive. Next season promised much from this squad and already plans and preparation is under way for the summer training schedule.

Our thirds bowed out of the Webb cup at the semi final stage when Bruff held the upper hand for almost the entire game to win by 15-8. It’s a pity that this excellent squad have yet to be rewarded for their efforts, but at least they get one more crack at silverware when they head to Cobh to play in the Munster J2 semi final on Sunday.
