It is with great regret that we find ourselves in a position of having to close the most popular rugby forum in the country for the last number of years, the Shannon RFC guestbook. This drastic action has been prompted by a number of high profile court cases in recent months pertaining to Internet defamation.
Internet defamation is on the increase and from advice received from the Dept of Justice - Law reform there are EU e-commerce directive drafts being put in place which has provisions on liability from the point of the service provider, hosts and intermediary providers. Defamation by whatever media is still defamation.
Although over the last 5 years, and over 800,000 hits, we have received only minor complaints, we feel that substantial action could be taken against Shannon RFC in the future and we are not prepared to take any undue risks that may have negative implications for the club.
The Shannon RFC website is run entirely on a voluntary basis and to initiate other discussion forums such as that on the IRFU site is impractical for those involved. We will however continue to keep all other content on our website up to date including match reports and club news etc.
Whilst we acknowledge that we have provided a genuine and entertaining forum for the wider Irish rugby public, we have a responsibility to the members of Shannon RFC in ensuring that the best interests of their club are maintained at all times.
