Hi all, we haven’t much in the way of notes this week as we had no competitive adult fixtures in the club as a mark of respect towards the death of Anthony Foley. Below is a letter from John Leahy and Noel Healy written on behalf of the executive committee after last week.
On behalf of the Executive at Shannon RFC we would like to complement our entire membership on the exemplary fashion in which you carried out your duties following the tragic events of last weekend.
In what must surely have been the most difficult period in the history of our great club you maintained Shannon’s dignity and composure in a manner befitting the memory of a truly great man.
To endeavour to repay Anthony for his countless contributions to Shannon would be an impossible task. However, it was obvious to the world how much we loved him and how we regarded him as one of our own.
It was obvious too how deeply we wished to honour his memory.
All of us will remember forever the incredibly moving scenes on Wednesday night when we momentarily received Anthony’s remains for the last time as they passed the Shannon Clubhouse.
The magnificent and moving rendition of “The Isle” and how our President was respectfully supported by so many.
To Kevin and his staff at the clubhouse we say “thank you” for remaining open each day for the entire week. This allowed us to receive the many dignitaries who visited us to sympathise and indeed facilitated the many thousands who signed the books of condolences.
Thank you also to the boys and girls of our underage. You wore the number eight and flew our flags with pride during Saturdays game, along with Lee, our captain you made us proud.
To Katie, our PRO, as ever you did a fantastic job.
Anthony Foley will be remembered by us with affection, pride and respect. His name will live forever in the annals of Shannon RFC.
We again offer our heartfelt sympathy to Anthony’s family. We mourn and grieve with you.
Finally, to all our former greats who joined us in our collective sadness, many from different parts of the world, thank you for your support and it was great to see you all again. You too are part of this wonderful Shannon family.
Though our hearts are heavy, Shannon will endure certain that Anthony’s spirit will remain with us wherever our beloved Black and Blue is worn.
As usual we will be running a pre-match function for our match versus Dolphin on the 5th of November. The same value as usual applies with three courses for 20. The events are really taking off and we have been fully booked out for the last two, book early to avoid disappointment! Call Kevin: 087-4187385 or email email@example.com to book a place.
There are also a few places available for the Maori game on the 11th of November. The marquee has been erected outside our clubhouse and it is seriously impressive. Contact Kevin for more details!
The lotto for the last week showed no winners.
For the 29th of September the numbers drawn were; 15, 17, 23, 26 and consolation prizes of €50 went to:
Jim Smith c/o Browne’s Parteen
John Kent c/o Club
Alex McConkey c/o Club
Next week’s draw is for €4,100 and will be held in The Meelick Tavern on the 27th October.
