Hi all, we are well and truly back into the swing of things now and most, if not all of our teams are back in action! We have a busy weekend ahead with us welcoming teams to Coonagh and the rest out on the road. Our Underage are holding a “New Members Open Day” in Coonagh on Sunday, with CJ Stander also making an appearance. Find out more information here.
Our firsts kicked off the league this weekend welcoming Ballymena to Thomond Park, there is a full match report, team line-up, and match score information available on our website here. While the score didn’t go our way the match was a solid display of rugby. Shannon dominated large chucks of the match and our forwards got the upper hand in the scrums. Onwards to Athlone this weekend to take on Buccaneers in Dubarry Park. We will be live tweeting from the match with updates live on our websites home page here for those without twitter.
Our seconds welcomed Newcastle West to Coonagh on Monday night for the Transfield Cup semi-final. It was a toughly fought match in front of a large crowd, with Newcastle West persistently attacking for a lot of the first half. The seconds defence was fantastic and the second half showed a different match. Shannon stepped up the intensity and after a dogged second half; Shannon emerged victorious with a score line of 14-10. Scorers for Shannon were Marcus McMenemy with a try, Ben Sargent with a Penalty and Conor Fitzgerald with 2 penalties. Shannon now go on to play Richmond in the Transfield Cup final in what is sure to be a great match!
The 20s were unfortunate to have their match postponed last Friday and will be eagerly looking forward to their match v this weekend.
The thirds had the score of the weekend beating old rivals Thomond 36-5 in the McInerney. A fantastic team performance saw Shannon score a brace of tries and they maintained their high intensity performance over the 80 minutes. It was a fantastic start to the season for our thirds who will start as they mean to go on.
Our ladies received a walkover from Cashel who could not field a team. They travel to Thurles this Sunday for an earlier kick off time of 11:45.
Our underage had a good turnout this weekend. Coonagh was a hive of activity on Sunday morning despite the weather. It was business as usual and the teams were delighted to welcome some of the Senior XV players out to pass on advice and tips. It was a great morning, rounded off by the usual breakfast sausage rolls cooked by our president! Don’t forget to look out for some familiar faces at our Open Day this weekend, CJ stander will be out to see what we have to offer as well as one or two other familiar faces.
Our u13s took on UL Bohs in their first game of the season. Despite narrowly losing to Bohs the lads displayed a tremendous attitude throughout, and their coaches were extremely proud of their efforts. Two excellent tries ensured their efforts did not go without reward! Next week the lads host Garryowen and Killaloe!
We will be holding a pre-match function for our next home match in Thomond Park v Naas on the 8th of October. Kickoff is at 4pm and we are using the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate our 1976/77 Cup winning team! We will be showing the Munster v Leinster match beforehand in the clubhouse and are taking bookings already. The last event was a huge success with great food and atmosphere. Call Kevin: 087-4187385 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to book a place.
We will also be holding a big event in the club for the Munster v Maori match on the 11th of November. There will be a fully heated marquee with gourmet canapes, hot finger food and desert canapes. Music will be provided by Michael J Leonard – all idea for November in Thomond Park! €80 per person including your ticket or €30 per person without a match ticket. The spaces are flying out the door with plenty of tickets being snapped up since we advertised it this week on Facebook!
