Shannon v Old Wesley

We returned to Coonagh this weekend for a bitterly cold showdown that saw us host Old Wesley. WE recovered the kick off and kicked the ball back while Old Wesley brought the ball back up to our 22. We missed a tackle and allowed them launch an organized attack through the forwards. They moved the attack across the pitch and edged towards our line, knocking it on when they reached out 5. Old Wesley won the resulting scrum and after bringing up the ball they set up a maul, sending the hooker over the line when he peeled off the back. The try was converted and left the score 7-0 at 3 minutes.
Old Wesley recovered the kick off and launched a box kick off the back of the ruck, we gathered and were awarded a penalty for Old Wesley being offside. Conor Fitzgerald kicked us to the Old Wesley 22 for a line out. We got clean ball off the top and attacked through backs with Lee Nicholas offering solid support. Old Wesley turned over the ball and kicked ahead, we recovered and gained a penalty for a high tackle. We kicked for touch and spread it wide off the line out, bringing our backs into play and applying pressure on the old Wesley line. Ronan McKenna got his hands on the ball next and went over for an unconverted try. The score read 7-5 at 8 minutes.
Minutes later, old Wesley were on the attack just inside out half, when we gained a penalty for hands in the ruck. Conor Fitzgerald kicked us to their 22. Unfortunately, we knocked on in the line out and Old Wesley took the scrum. John Foley did really well to break off the back and put in an awesome tackle halting the old Wesley attack, however we were called back to an earlier penalty where Shannon were guilty of not rolling away from a previous tackle. They kicked to our 22 where we stole the line out and launched an attack with our backs coming onto the ball from deep. We were making good ground but got tackled into touch. Old Wesley were back in possession and attacking hard but didn’t get much ground as the Shannon defense held tough. As they reached our 10 they chipped ahead, the ball came off a Shannon boot and into touch.
A minute later Old Wesley were back on the attack when we gave away a penalty on our 5 meter line for coming up offside. Old Wesley took a quick kick across the field, their winger gathered and, finding space, he sailed over the line. He converted his own try leaving the score 14-5 at 18 minutes.
An unfortunate knock on from the kick off saw us scrum down on half way with Old Wesley in possession. We were unlucky to give away a penalty here. Old Wesley kicked to our 22 and kept the attack tight from the line out. They come in off their feet at the ruck and Conor Fitzgerald kicked us to our 22. We kick deep from the line out and their fullback returned to our 22. We won the following line out but the ref pinged us for early engagement, Old Wesley opted to scrum on our 22. They got the ball out from the scrum and launch an organised attack but knocked on as they got inside our 22. We put in a solid scrum and gained a penalty.
Conor kicked us to outside our 22 and we were strong in the line out, forming a maul that began to gain ground when it was pulled down, gifting us a penalty. Conor Fitzgerald kicked us to the half-way line. Keith Kavanagh made a great break off the line out but we were unfortunate to knock on in the next phase. Old Wesley fumbled the ball at the back of the scrum, but managed to successfully get a boot it. They chipped to the half way where we took the scrum. We again gained a penalty here but missed touch off the resulting kick. Old Wesley recovered this and kicked back to their 10. We were strong in attack from the next phase with Shane Mullally, Greg O’Shea and Lee Nicholas all making massive carries. We get a penalty here for Old Wesley being offside and Conor Fitzgerald kicked us to their 5.
We kept the ball with the forwards who were attacking in pods closer and closer to the Old Wesley line. They sniped in and turned over the ball nut knocked on gifting us a scrum 5 on the Wesley 5. We scrummed down and John Foley picked and went from the back attacking the blind side. We were applying fantastic pressure with Conor Glynn taking the ball up. Wesley then received a yellow card for coming up offside and we opted to tip and go, still attacking the Wesley line. Unfortunately, we knocked on and Welsey were in possession in the scrum and opted to run it from their own 5. Again, John Foley was immense in defense and put in a great hit knocking Welsey into touch on their 10. We gave away a penalty in the maul here for truck and trailer and they kicked to our 10. They knocked on in the line out and we drove their scrum back gaining a penalty. We kicked this to their 22 and attacked through the backs from the line out but unfortunately, we were tackled to touch signaling the end of the half.
We kicked off the second half and Wesley recovered kicking back. Greg recovered and linked up well with Luke O’Dea and we went forward in attack but unfortunately knocked on. Wesley were in possession of the scrum on their 22. They shipped the ball out to their center who made a break. Jack O’Donnell put in a great hit and Wesley were found to be holding on in the ruck. We kicked to their 22. We mauled off the line out and gained good ground, the maul continued to move -pushing over the line and Ty Chan gets the ball down. Ronan McKenna missed the conversion but left the score 10-14 to Wesley.
After the kick off, we were unfortunate to knock on, on the half way. Wesley 8 picked and went off the scrum, attacking our 10 channel and they then attacked wide through their backs. They quickly changed direction and chipped to the wing. In a good display of skill, the ball hit the winger’s boots, he chipped it on and scores. This was converted leaving the score 21-10 to Old Wesley at 48 minutes.
A minute later we got a penalty and Shane Mullaly tipped and went. He made great ground, reaching their 5 and we rucked over him, keeping the attack alive. After great pressure, we had a penalty coming for a high tackle. We attacked wide in free play but were called back for the initial penalty where Wesley were shown a yellow card. We kick to their 5 and Ty Chan was sure in the line out - hitting his man, we set up a solid maul which made good ground, we then got another penalty for Wesley pulling it down. We kick to their 5 again and set up another solid maul which trundled towards the line. We push over and this time Lee Nicholas touched down. Ronan McKenna converted leaving the score 21-17 to Old Wesley at 54 minutes.
One minute later and we were in the Wesley half and attacking hard. We crashed the ball up the middle and Shane Mullally made a fantastic break evading all defender and scored a smashing try. Ronan McKenna slotted over the conversion - 24-21 to us at 57 minutes. Brian Downey got straight in under the ball from the kick off. Wesley turned over in the next play and kicked gaining a line out. They shipped the ball wide but a great Shannon defense drove Wesley back. They slowly worked their way towards our 22. The ref then penalized Shannon in front of the posts and they kicked it, leveling up the score at 59 minutes 24-24.
Greg recovered the kick off and made a great break down the wing but was tackled to touch. Wesley were back in possession and attacked the midfield through the forwards, they then knocked on. We scrummed down in possession on half way. This was reset and we gained a penalty. Ronan McKenna kicked us to their 22 but they managed to get a hand on the ball in the line out. They worked the ball out wide and used the space to the side line, we then gained a penalty for hands in the ruck. We went for the posts but were unfortunate to miss. Wesley dropped out and we recovered, attacking out wide. Shane Mullally took off on a gallop again and shipped the ball to Luck O’Dea who linked up with Ronan McKenna who was on his shoulder in support. We went back for a penalty and another yellow card for Wesley. We kick to the corner and set up another strong maul from the line out. It initially appeared that we went over for a try but we crossed in the motion and gave away a penalty. Wesley kicked to their own 22 and mauled from the back. Lee Nicholas did really well to keep the pressure on and didn’t make it easy for their scrum half to get ball away. Wesley attacked through the backs but we gave away a penalty for playing the ball on the ground. Will Leonard saw a yellow for this and Wesley got touch in our corner.
Wesley mauled from the line out and this time we got a penalty for crossing. We kicked to our 22 and got a solid line out, we kicked downfield from this. Wesley recovered and attack with the ref giving a penalty against Shannon. Wesley opted to kick to touch and got a line out inside our 22 in which Riley Winter turned over. The linesman spotted an infringement here and put has flag out. We kicked into the Wesley half and the game stopped to allow the ref to talk to his linesmen. After his chat the ref walked us back from half way where we had a penalty, to give us a penalty on the 22. We kicked to their 22 and attacked wide, bringing it back up the middle but were unfortunately knock on.
Wesley were in possession of the scrum on our 22 and we drove them a few yards back gaining a penalty. As it was just over 80 minutes we opted for the posts but were unfortunate to miss. Wesley caught the ball and attack from their line. We gave away a penalty and Wesley tipped and went, attacking up the middle. We were again penalized and Wesley again opted to tip and go. They worked their way into our half and after the ball was kicked out the ref blew it up leaving us with a draw. 24-24 final score!
